Spoken word emerges again at EWF

Words by Benjamin Solah

FCAC_AnisMojgani-340x226The Emerging Writers’ Festival is beginning this Thursday and if you’re into spoken word, there’s certainly events for you to get along to. The line-up of spoken word artists and poets in the festival program include Jessica Alice, Ali Alizadeh, Khairani ‘Okka’ Barokka, Alison Croggon, Josephine Rowe, Alicia Sometimes, Jessica L. Wilkinson and Arda Barut. There are also a heap of events that are relevant to spoken word artists, as it is for all kinds of writers.

But the most impressive event is One Night Stanza coming up this Sunday night, supported by the Emerging Writers’ Festival. American slam poet, Anis Mojgani, will perform at the Footscray Arts Centre, hosted by another American slam poet, Ken Arkind as well as Carrie Rudzinski, Randall Stephens and Steve Smart, Michelle Dabrowski, Grace Vanilau and Ajak Kwai. It is an impressive line-up and like the Global Poetics tour a few years back that Ken Arkind was apart of, it’s a very rare chance for an Australian audience to be wowed by the American slam poets that some of us have come to love on YouTube. Tickets will likely sell out so people need to book ASAP to avoid being heartbroken when all your friends rave about how great it was.

The other spoken word event that looks impressive is Sweatshop Stories. It’s brought to you by the Sweatshop Western Sydney Literacy Movement and featuring eight performers, the event describes itself as “Welcome to the sweatshops of Western Sydney, where every Aussie gets a fair go. Pockets are full and guns are empty. There are no racists here. No misogynists and no homophobes. Where the Wogs rule and the Anglos have assimilated.” It definitely sounds politically charged and unlikely to be accused of being mild-mannered and holding anything inside. As someone who grew up in Western Sydney, and who loves poets who hang their politics up on their microphone, I am sad to miss this one as I’m performing at the Dan O’Connell that afternoon from 2pm, but going along to Sweatshop Stories is probably the best excuse you’ll have for missing my own performance.

Melbourne Spoken Word will also be representing the spoken word scene in Melbourne as part of Page Parlour on the night of the 30th of May, where we will be selling books and CDs from Melbourne spoken word artists and poets. Look out for us!

Keep Left returns in June

Words by Benjamin Solah

keepleftKeep Left, a great poetry gig that celebrated left-wing poetry in Melbourne, run by Paulie ran monthly for most of the second half of 2012. I was lucky enough to be the first ever feature. It was an ambitious gig with a real identity and had promise, but sadly ceased to be toward the end of last year. I’ve decided to revive the gig starting in June, with the help of other progressive poets. The home of Keep Left will now be at the Activist Arts Hub, Under the Hammer, a space for left-wing artists. The first gig will feature Maxine Beneba Clarke on Saturday, June 22 from around 8pm.

Third spoken word night at Egg Gallery on August 5

Sunday, August 5 @ 5pm – Egg Gallery, 66a Johnston Street, Fitzroy – Facebook event

Egg Gallery along Johnston Street in Fitzroy have begun regular spoken word nights to complement their art exhibitions, which is an exciting new collaboration between the wordy and visual. They’ve been happening roughly monthly and the third night will take place on Sunday, August 5 from 5pm and feature seven poets doing ten-minute sets including Amy Bodossian, Amanda Anastasi, Benjamin Solah, Anna Fern, Emilie Collyer, Annerliegh Pappos & Steve Smart. It’s also hosted or ‘DJ’d’ by Santo Cazzati.

Previous performer Randall Stephens on the new event said,

“Melbourne poetry at it’s most basic, comin’ in from the cold off a busy street in a dive part of town, performing for mostly non-poets, sitting on a dusty concrete floor, drinking out a cask being passed around, an arm’s length from the speaker/audience. Nowhere to hide. Loved it.”

Other upcoming performances include Koraly Dimitriadis vs Ben John Smith in a poetry war at Polyester Books on August 3 as well as West Word in Footscray featuring Santo Cazzati and then George O’Hara on August 12 and 26 respectively. As always, keep up to date with upcoming events and features on the left sidebar or at our dedicated page.

Darkwing Dubs comes to Melbourne for a show and workshop

Brisbane’s Darkwing Dubs is “set to put a fire under Melbourne spoken word’s cold winter ass” with a live show and two-day workshop from Friday the 13th of July to Sunday the 15th. The host of Jam Jar poetry impressed Melbourne poetry events with shows last year at Slamalamadingdong, Sweetalkers, and Passionate Tongues. He’s definitely one of the most unique and engaging performers in Australia mixing the moving and amusing, spoken word, hip hop and theatre.

Institute of Postcolonial Studies in North Melbourne, he will be doing a special half an hour set on Friday, the 13th of July with added performances by Tariro Mavondo, Randall Stephens and Sista Zai and hosted by Steve Smart followed by a two-day workshop on Saturday and Sunday. And it’s all hosted by the fabulous ‘Stillwaters Women’s Storytelling Collective.’ More information at their Facebook event.

Melbourne Poets take to the streets of Northcote

As part of the Northern Exposure Visual Festival, Annerliegh has organised for some Melbourne poets to take to the streets and become a real metaphor on the tour of High Street. Poets are part of the furniture. Or should be.

On Friday the 15th of June, six street poets will take their place at three street venues as part of the Visual Art Tours. The tours start at 6:30 and then again at 8pm beginning at the Northcote Uniting Church, then onto our first poet who will perform on the steps of the Town Hall. The second poet will perform outside the Peacock Hotel, with the final poet waxing lyrical at the tram stop next to IGA. If you hang around you might see some freestyling by these artists throughout the night.

Poets will include Meena Shamaly, Brigitte Lewis, Lana Woolf, Kirsti Whalen, Benjamin Solah and Santo Cazatti.

A further night of street poetry will occur next week – watch this space for details.

Slamalamadingdong returns in June with Maxine Clark and new slams

Slamalamadingdong, Melbourne’s premiere poetry slam, run by one of the scene’s community building heavyweights, Michelle Dabrowski is back after a month long hiatus and boy did our calendar miss it. With a new look and poster, the June slam will feature “the daring, the fiery, the original Melbourne’s own Maxine Beneba Clark” alongside a limited slam of 7 competitors. It’s also the beginning of some exciting experimentation with the slam format. There’s a teaser for a ‘jam slam’ with musical accompaniment and later on, they’re going to be playing with the ‘interview slam’ format where competitors are interviewed after they perform and are scored.

Sign up is at 8pm sharp. Get there early. Facebook event is here and as always, keep up to date with upcoming events on our upcoming events page.
